What is a PNG file?
PNG, which stands for Portable Network Graphics, is a widely used raster graphics file format. It was designed as a patent-free alternative to the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) and supports lossless data compression. PNG can display up to 16.8 million colors through its 24-bit color depth, making it ideal for web graphics, logos, and images that require transparency. The format is well-supported by web browsers and image editing software, and its files are often smaller than comparable GIF images, enhancing web performance.
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format, and it's a relatively new and advanced format for storing images. Developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), which includes tech giants like Google, Mozilla, Microsoft, and Apple, AVIF is based on the open-source AV1 video coding standard. It was created to provide a more efficient alternative to older image formats like JPG, offering better compression while maintaining high image quality. AVIF files can support both lossy and lossless compression, as well as high dynamic range (HDR) colors and transparency, making them suitable for a wide range of applications from web graphics to high-quality photography. Although not yet as universally supported as JPG, AVIF is rapidly gaining traction due to its superior compression capabilities, which can result in significantly smaller file sizes for the same level of visual quality.
